About Us
The UC Berkeley Steel Bridge Team is a student-led organization dedicated to structural engineering excellence. Each year, we manage a complete project lifecycle from inception to completion: designing, drafting, fabricating, and constructing an entirely student-built, 20-plus-foot steel bridge for the AISC Student Steel Bridge Competition. Our 60-member team serves as a vital bridge between classroom theory and industry reality. We train members of all majors and experience levels from the ground up, equipping them with proficiency in industry-standard software and hands-on manufacturing skills. Beyond engineering, we are proud to foster an inclusive, close-knit, and supportive community within the Cal Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) department.
Fall Semester
All members collaborate in specialized design teams to analyze the year's new rules and optimize our bridge's geometry. Using software like AutoCAD and SAP2000, members learn to model structural behaviors. Once finalized, our SolidWorks and Fusion 360 teams transform these concepts into precise shop drawings.
Spring Semester
The team transitions into the Davis and Cory machine shops. Under strict safety protocols, students handcut, weld, and machine every single member and connection. Our construction team trains relentlessly to assemble the complex bridge safely, quickly, and efficiently for the timed competition.
